Psyche Unbound: Essays in Honor of Stanislav Grof
Richard Tarnas; Sean Kelly
[Santa Fe]: Multipdisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies, 2022.“Psyche Unbound is an extraordinary compilation of twenty-two essays that honor the pathbreaking lifework of Stanislav Grof, the world’s leading researcher in psychedelic therapy, breathwork, and the exploration of non-ordinary states of consciousness. Over the past half century, Grof has conducted thousands of LSD-assisted psychotherapy sessions, developed unique frameworks for supporting and understanding mental health, and ultimately created a new, expansive cartography of the mind that welcomes spiritual experience with openness, rigor, and reverence. In honor of Grof’s 90th birthday, this seminal collection of essays ranges from Joseph Campbell’s and Huston Smith’s remarkable assessments in the early 1970s as they first encountered and recognized the significance of Grof’s discoveries, to current reflections by psychiatrists and researchers participating in today’s renaissance of psychedelic therapy. In between are major essays that forward Grof’s work on numerous theoretical and therapeutic fronts: implications for social and cultural change, transpersonal sexual experiences, the perinatal dimensions of Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1935 mescaline experience, comparative studies with Asian religious systems, and illuminating parallels with the philosophical views of Alfred North Whitehead and William James, as well as discoveries in quantum and relativistic physics. Edited by Richard Tarnas and Sean Kelly, Psyche Unbound is an homage to one of the greatest clinicians in history and his powerful legacy of healing the soul and evolving human consciousness.” (publisher’s blurb)

Fugitive Text
Peter Maloney
Melbourne: M.33, 2022.“Fugitive Text draws together photographic diptychs and triptychs made since the mid-1990s in response to the artist’s experience of love, desire and loss through the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It incorporates photographs taken in-camera as well as images drawn from a variety of sources, including vintage photographs found in flea markets and images re-photographed from pornography and popular culture. The photographs – views of architectural and public spaces, flowers, nudes, images of sea and sky – are paired and, in most cases, overpainted with text –anecdotes, fragments drawn from memory, popular verse and queer culture. The images draw on Peter Maloney’s experience of the HIV/AIDS pandemic (as an HIV-positive person who lost much of their social group during the 1980s and early 1990s) and on photography’s specific relationship to memory, time and place, and testimony. Combined with scraps of text, the images become memory fragments. The memories suggested by these works are those of someone remembering love and loss – friends and lovers lost to HIV/AIDS, and also the moments of desire, risk and sensation that in a way mark the queer experience of time and space. The book, with its exposed spine and multiple fold out triptychs, was designed by Elliott Bryce Foulkes and is in itself an object of exceptional beauty. The works are accompanied by texts by the prominent American author and cultural critic Lynne Tillman and writer and curator Shaune Lakin.” (publisher’s blurb)

Bawdy Tales & Trifles of Devilries for Ladies & Gentlemen of Experience
Eugene Lepoittevin
Port Townsend: Feral House, 2021.“Commissioned by and for wealthy aristocrats for their private amusements, we introduce you to a selection of stories, poems, limericks, and bon mots assured to delight the most refined of connoisseurs. Complimented by rare erotic lithographs by renowned illustrator Eugene Lepoittevin. Lepoittevin’s Devils first appeared to acclaim in 1832. Originally, his devil was an impish troublemaker. At the behest of his publisher, he created a new series of lithographs featuring his devils ala erotique. The drawings are more humorous than titillating and reflect the sense of absurdity prevalent in European eroticism. Even so, the drawings were long banned in Europe and the United States, with the government going so far as to confiscate copies intended for the Kinsey Institute in 1956. The selection of writings is culled from humorous erotic pastiches and rare writing privately printed for exclusive collectors by underground publishers that have long been hidden in the Private Case of the British Library and the L’Enfer of the Biblioteque nationale du France. Bawdy Tales is designed with the collector in mind, utilizing vegan leather and gold embossing to simulate period morocco binding. Art Historian Sarah Burns introduces Lepoittevin’s work and career. Expert collector of written erotica, “Lady Fanny Woodcock” contributes a short history of the erotic book in Western culture.” (publisher’s blurb)
