[Adelaide]: South Australian Government Photolithographic Department, No date.4 photographs mounted in a full leather presentation album showing a silver challenge shield and silver plate table piece of a model of Captain Cook’s ship, the Endeavour, which was gifted from The People of Australia to HMS Commonwealth, a King Edward VII-class battleship of the British Royal Navy at a naval review in 1911. The album contains the bookplate of lawyer, politician, and Federalist, Sir Josiah Henry Symon (1846-1934). Symon represented the Commonwealth Government at the review and made the presentation of the shield and table piece. Photographs by the S. A. Govt. Photolithographic Dept, A. Vaughan, Govt. Ballarat: Richards & Co., No date.Photographic portrait of the Very Rev. Nathaniel Linden Parkyn (1851-1931), signed by him on the mount, “Your very affectionate friend, N. Lindon Parkyn”. Born in England, Parkyn was ordained in 1891 and served as curate in several English towns and villages before coming to Australia and serving as the second Dean of the Anglican Diocese of Ballarat from 1897-1914. He was remembered as an articulate speaker and a benevolent public figure to citizens of all denominations. He returned to England in 1914 where he served as vicar at Blackpool until 1821 before retiring to Bath where he died in 1931. An earlier portrait of Parkyn, taken before he came to Australia, is held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This later portrait by Richards & Co. of Ballarat circa 1910. No photographic holdings of Dean Parkyn can be found in any Australian institution.

[Germany]: No publisher, 1911.Depicting a group of young soldiers posing in a private apartment as though for a theatrical play. They wear long shirts but no trousers, a few carry weapons – rifles and a sword – and most have a hat. One wears a spiked helmet, another what looks like a tin helmet. Posted in Rustersiel to Herr Hegemann in Aachen and postmarked 1911, it identifies them as members of the third sea battalion. The letter is mostly everyday notes, references going to China after Christmas.

Of particular note is the signed introductory letter, which even accounting for rough translation offers a concerning glimpse into the tour: “We hope that you behave reasonably well in front of our chief tour conductor,.. not insisting so much with your traditional habit back home. You are encouraged to consume as much alcohol as you wish while traveling by car, unless you are taking your turn on the wheel, otherwise you as well as your tour conductors will be in trouble with the local police. Your chief conductor,.. already has enough remarkable records with the police without your additional helps to make it even more memorable from the police’s point of view.”
