Los Angeles: Athletic Model Guild, 1969.Single 1960s issue of the most popular of beefcake magazines, Physique Pictorial, produced by Bob Mizer’s AMG. The Natural double issue with several colour sheets. Early issues feature scantily clad athletic men in fitness poses together with homoerotic artwork by Tom of Finland, Harry Bush, George Quaintance, and others. If you can stayed focused the text provides insight into gay culture and rights at the time, as well as details on the models and artwork. Into the late 1960s and 1970s as the laws around censorship change, the beefcake physique magazine became more naked and blatantly homoerotic. This issue marks the transition of the magazine to this more naked and sexualised display.

Owned by Allan Wells, The Classic Cat on the Sunset Strip was an icon of Los Angeles’ strip club scene operating from the mid 1960s to the late 1970s at 8844 Sunset Boulevard. A new restaurant by the same name opened in the building next door in the 2000s and still operates today. The magazine features many of the club’s “kittens” on and off stage, as well as celebrity patrons of the club. Rare, unrecorded in OCLC.
